In summary, here are the tips I recommend when weeding small vinyl decals:

  • Go Slow – watch all the pieces of your design stay where they should.
  • Place your finger and/or weeding tool or blade down on pieces that may lift up during the peeling.
  • Use a squeegee tool to hold rows of lettering or objects down for quick weeding.
  • Cut with an X-acto knife to cut the vinyl between lines. Make sure not to cut through the backing paper though!
  • Unsure your vinyl machine settings are correct (speed, force)
  • Have a sharp blade on your vinyl machine.
  • Keep your maintenance up on your vinyl machine. Replace your cutting strip when it starts getting worn (like mine!).

The most crucial things about weeding small decals is to ensure your machine is in the best shape as possible. If that is well taken care of – then weeding should go easily. Let me know if you have any other tips on how to weed small vinyl decals that you would add or that works for you!
