Vinyl Decal Business Ideas – Pick your niche!

Vinyl Decal Business Ideas - How to make money selling decals - Start a vinyl decal business

Do you want to start a vinyl decal business? There are SO many niche options to choose from when starting your vinyl decal business. This post is to show you how many varieties of vinyl decal business ideas you can start! We’ll start with an ultimate list of vinyl decal niches I came up with, as well as questions to consider when choosing a niche. Let’s get started!

In the beginning, it’s easy to be overwhelmed with all the things that you can make with your vinyl cutter. For me, the idea of creating large decals was overwhelming and so I began with creating small tiny fingernail decals. It wasn’t until a year or two later that I began branching out with some larger decals that could make more of a profit and were easier to make. So like me, you may start somewhere and end up morphing your decal business into something else – and that it totally fine! Don’t let the overall picture overwhelm you to the point you don’t begin at all. Baby steps is all it takes.

Vinyl Decal Business Ideas – How to pick your niche

Your first step in starting a vinyl decal business is choosing a vinyl decal niche. There are soo many different types of decals you can make! Here’s a handy list of potential vinyl decal business ideas!

Questions to Consider

Your next step it to ask yourself the below questions for each niche you are interested in. These questions will help you determine if that particular niche will be good for you to pursue.

  • Am I able to create this type of decal?
    • Do you have all the equipment needed? Office space to create the decals? Access to supplies?
  • Do I want to create this type of decal?
    • Is this a niche that interests you? Do you have a connection to this particular niche? Does it make you excited to make it?
  • How much time does it take to create this type of decal?
    • Is it quick to make? Or does it take longer? Factor what your time is worth
  • What are my costs to create this type of decal?
    • How much are your supplies, office rent, equipment, etc?
  • How much profit can I expect to get after expenses?
    • Is it worth it to make? Is there a good margin?
  • What are my shipping options to ship this type of decal?
    • Do you ship to customers? Do you deliver locally? How much is shipping labels, shipping supplies, packaging supplies, branding supplies, etc?
  • Will my end user know how to use this type of decal?
    • Can your customer use and apply this decal? Do you they need a professional installation? What instructions will you give them?
  • Is there a market for this type of decal?
    • Are people searching for this decal? Are people buying this type of decal? How many sales can you anticipate?
  • Who will I sell this decal to?
    • What type of people are buying this decal? Who will you market this decal to? What are their needs?
  • How will I sell this decal to my customer?
    • Website, Online Marketplaces (Etsy, Amazon, eBay, etc.?), local shops, your own storefront, expos?

Now that you’ve gone through all of these questions, you now have a better idea if that particular decal niche will work for you and your customer.

Like What You Create

This may be obvious, but it’s important that you LIKE and even love to create the decal that you want to sell. If you do not, you’ll find that you may experience burn-out really quickly and your job won’t be that enjoyable.

When I made nail decals, it was exciting at first. But then I introduced some small door and window decals. The door and window decals were much easier and quicker to make. I began dreading the nail orders and was frustrated at the amount of time it took not only to cut it, but to weed those tiny decals! As I transitioned to larger wall decor decals, I loved creating them! As a result, I deactivated the nail decals and focused on the decals I liked creating better.

One more thought about why you should niche down: when customers come to your site or shop, it should be obvious exactly what products you will provide to them within seconds. Having too much of a variety of decals may confuse the customer and may deter them away from purchasing.

For example, if you offer racing decals, business front decals, and wall decor decals, it’s confusing. You technically *can* provide all these types of decals, but I recommend having a separate shop or website for each decal niche. Customers need clear direction and information within seconds of seeing your vinyl decal business.

In conclusion, picking a niche may be overwhelming, but narrowing it down will help you get started. To start a vinyl decal business, pick a niche from the ideas above, go through the questions listed above, and begin your journey!
